Not every roof noise or stain is a real problem. Here are the signs we see most often that point to a real underlying issue worth addressing now rather than later.
A brown or yellow ring on a ceiling almost always means water has made it past the underlayment. The leak source is usually several feet uphill from where the stain appears.
Heavy granule loss means your shingle layer is breaking down. A small amount is normal after a new install; ongoing loss after year five is a sign of accelerated aging.
Visible from the ground in most cases. Lifted edges let wind get underneath and rip shingles off in the next storm — better to seal them down now.
Tile roofs lose individual tiles to wind, foot traffic, and freeze cycles.
Rust streaks, gaps, or lifted metal around chimneys, skylights, and vents are the most common leak source on roofs 10+ years old. Inexpensive to reseal, expensive to ignore.
If you can see daylight through the roof deck from inside the attic, water and pests are also getting in. This is an immediate-attention repair.
